Can your landlord raise the rent? What the law actually says
Not for three years from the start of the lease, unless your contract says otherwise.
- A landlord may not raise the rent of a home until three years have passed since the lease began, or since the last agreed increase, unless the contract says otherwise.
- "Lease start" means the day the relationship first began under contract, not each yearly renewal at the municipality.
- One exception: if you asked for improvements and the landlord carried them out, the rent can rise in proportion to their cost.
- We found no percentage cap on increases in the law text. Read your contract closely: the words "unless agreed otherwise" matter.
The post on X: "Omani law: no rent increase until 3 years after the lease starts or after the last agreed increase, unless the contract says otherwise. We found no percentage cap in the law text."
